Marlow gained promotion with an excellent win over Amersham and Chalfont whilst being backed by their largest away following of the season— George and Umpire Tony—the support was loud throughout the game. However, Tony had to be warned for his chant about Wycombe.
With the chance to secure promotion, a fantastic crowd, and perfect weather, what could possibly go wrong?
Well, conceding within the first five minutes wasn’t ideal. However, Marlow quickly raised their game, launching decisive attacks and building a 2-1 lead by halftime.
The first goal came from Matt, who sprinted down the wing to latch onto a pass just before it went out of play, squaring for Frosty to slot past the keeper. Unfortunately, Matt’s determination to reach the ball saw him crash into the fence, forcing him to take a breather. Luckily, this didn’t affect his performance. Once back on, Frosty turned provider, slipping the ball to Matt, who continued his run and calmly slotted it past the keeper.
The rest of the half was fairly even. While Marlow dominated possession, they struggled to turn it into clear-cut chances.
Marlow upped the tempo in the second half, making their attacks more decisive. Their third goal came from an excellent through ball by Robbo, setting Frosty free, with him bursting into the D. The keeper came out to save the initial effort, but the ball broke loose at the top of the D, allowing Frosty to pounce and grab his second, putting Marlow 3-1 up.
To Amersham’s credit, they kept fighting and pulled off what was arguably the goal of the match. Their forward skipped down the wing, flicked the ball up, juggled it along the baseline, and volleyed it into the top corner—a great finish.
With the Wizard of Oz having gone missing in recent weeks, Dorothy—played by Raj in this case—finally found him. A perfect short-corner routine saw Raj deliver the ball to the top of the D, where Oz flicked it past the keeper before he could even react. Even the Lion would have been proud of that one.
Then came the Matt show. After scoring in the first half, he added two more, both fine strikes into the far post, earning him the Man of the Match award. Matt was so caught up in the moment that he forgot he had scored a hat-trick until someone pointed it out after the game! His three goals highlighted his determination to pick up the ball, drive at goal, and deliver precise finishes into the far corner.
Unfortunately, Marlow’s discipline was once again an issue. First, Mike ("I don’t argue with anyone") decided to argue with the referee and received a green card. Then, in the dying moments, Frosty—who for the second time was wiped out from behind, had a heated discussion with the Amersham players, and the umpire, in what can only be described as a bizarre decision (one even Prince Andrew would struggle to justify), was given a yellow card. Thankfully, neither card impacted the outcome of the game.
With promotion secured, Marlow now needs just three points from their final two games to win the league!
