With a changed lineup and formation, Marlow dominated from the beginning, controlling the tempo of the game and creating good chances, it looked as though Marlow would break the deadlock, however, there's no story that goes according to plan as Maidenhead scored the opening goal with a well worked short corner routine.
However, Marlow's dominance paid off when an excellent ball into the D from Robo fell to Bernie, who showing all the skills of a gymnast, swivelled and scored an excellent goal flying the ball into the side netting, giving the keeper no chance.
The first half continued with Marlow pushing forward and creating a few half chances with Maidenhead having limited opportunities resulting in Maidenhead changing their formation for the second half to try to combat Marlow's attacking 4-3-3 formation.
James making his debut for the 6s at right back was putting in an excellent shift, and despite the squad working hard as normal, we were struggling to put their keeper under pressure. However, as per the norm now, midway through the second half the Wizard of Oz stole the limelight with a short corner routine, striking the ball towards the far post where a mix-up between keeper and defender meant they allowed the ball to slip into the net.
Maidenhead pushed on and started to create more chances but Marlow were still strong on the break. There were some scary moments towards the very end of the game and Jack who had a fairly quiet game until then, pulled off a tremendous save with five minutes to go assisted by a goal-line clearance from Josh to deny a Maidenhead equaliser.
Marlow ran out deserved winners, pushing to joint second, two points behind Maidenhead, who still lead.
It was a great squad performance, with Raj taking man of the match for his continued effort in midfield but everyone played their part and deserved the recognition of beating the league leaders.
The management team rewarded the squad with a month off for warm weather training which started with a bizarre pub crawl round Marlow necking pints, where Toby excelled. As they say, rehydration is vital for top athletes and Toby certainly demonstrated that.
