In the end, it was a fair result as neither side fully capitalized on their possession. Marlow was stronger in the first half, pushing Amersham back and attacking down both wings, but they failed to create enough chances to secure a decisive lead. Unfortunately, Marlow couldn’t dominate midfield, and Amersham took control in the second half.
Marlow played fast-moving hockey, utilizing the entire pitch. The occasional Amersham breaks were comfortably dealt with by the defence. It seemed only a matter of time before Marlow would score.
The Wizard of Oz delivered again with another fine strike from a short corner, sending the ball into the far post. The Wizard of Oz continues to show his value both on the pitch and in the panto season. If only the Wizard could conjure up a few more goals, Marlow would be soaring.
As the game wore on, Amersham created more opportunities. Fortunately, Tom had an excellent game in goal, making fine saves and showing bravery by diving to the ground several times.
The second half was expected to be Marlow's chance to push forward; however, the opposite occurred. Amersham took control of the midfield and seized their opportunities, pushing Marlow back. When Marlow did get opportunities to attack, there weren’t enough players to capitalize, often running into dead ends or failing to deliver effective outcomes.
As Amersham increased the pressure, they earned their reward with a neat short corner. Tom’s heroics deserved more. Though Amersham dominated, they continued to attack down the congested middle resulting in limited actual attacks. Marlow, with limited opportunities to break forward, could not create significant chances and the few short corners that were won, came to nothing.
A frustrating but fair result. Marlow had the skills to deliver more, but need to return to the fast-flowing hockey they displayed in the first half. Looking ahead to the crucial game next week against league leaders Maidenhead, Marlow must focus on playing passing hockey and maximizing their potential. If they achieve this, victory will be within reach. Onwards and upwards.
Though not officially recognized, most players would view the Wizard of Oz as the man of the match for the second week running. Dominant at short corners, his all-around ability to pass in tight angles and get through Amersham's press made it look easy. "Oh no, he's not," shouted the crowd, but the management knew that indeed, ‘oh yes he is’.
