Marlow Hockey Club Report 29th March

Men's hockey results

Having won the league and gained promotion, Marlow Men's 1st team were still keen to finish the programme on a high.
They achieved that with a very competent performance against 3rd place Haslemere, a well-organised and lively team.
Marlow started well and quickly earned a penalty corner. That came to nothing, but the ball bounced around in the circle,
and Matt Law was on hand to pop the ball into the net. The rest of the first half was hard-fought and good to watch, but no goals came.
The second half saw Marlow more on top, and a flowing movement involving several players saw Alex Land score with the goalkeeper
out of position. The rest of the half was end to end, but Marlow kept possession better, and the defense coped with the visiting forwards well.
Marlow were playing some fine hockey, and eventually, another great move led to a goal by Oliver Blundy in the 60th minute.
Haslemere didn't give up and eventually scored a consolation goal, which their all-around energetic display deserved.
Marlow finished up by winning the League by 9 points with a record of P22 W18 D2 L2 Goals against 22, for 51, Points 56

The Men's 2nds were away to Abingdon 1st team. It has been a tough season for their mostly young team
but they will be in Premier League 2 again next season, helped by the experience they have gained.
It was a high-scoring game, with Marlow losing 7-4

Other men's results:-

3rd team lost 5-4 to Buckingham 1s away
4s drew 0-0 with Witney2
5s lost 2-1 to Reading 5
6s 3-3 with Phoenix and Ranelagh 3 away
7s beat Yateley 4 1-0

Women's results.

Marlow's 1sts final game of their season saw them traveling to sunny Bath. Marlow earned a penalty corner within minutes of the game commencing but were unable to open the scoring. Bath then dominated possession and territory, with Marlow being penned back into their own defensive circle. Superb defensive running from Beth Halbard saved a certain goal in the fourth minute and keeper Alys Ramm saved a penalty stroke before the whistle blew for quarter time. Marlow came back into the game again in the second quarter but Bath still had the better chances, however, neither team could break the deadlock going into half time. Bath continued to push and scored two goals in five minutes to take the lead. Marlow continued to have their own chances but couldn’t break the Bath defense, leaving the final score at 2-0.

It has been a hard season at the higher level, but Marlow will be there next season and looking forward to it.

The 2nd team had already won South Central Division 1 North and had no game this week, the game against Oxford University 2nds having been brought forward. They will be back in Premier division 2 next season
